The Prairie Cottage ~ Fostoria, Iowa

Are you interested in Iowa Native flowers and grasses?  If so, we have a treat for you and your family. The two planted areas in front of The Guest House are filled with plants native to Iowa. And, we've provided identification helpers in our library so your entire family can enjoy the thrill of knowing the names of these very hardy, and often ancient, natives.

Our guest house, The Prairie Cottage,  is located in Clay County: The first settlers arrived in Clay County in 1855, but the county was not officially organized until 1858. In 1866, the first settlers made their way to flat prairie area which is now known as Spencer.  In 1871, the area residents officially moved the the county seat to Spencer and it has remained the center of activity for all of Clay County.  There are often local celebrations honoring the Iowa prairie heritage and just 4 miles west of Fostoria is one of the area's finest sources of native plants, grasses and other prairie plant materials: The Prairie Flower.
